About
Who builds Stewardry
We are a small UK software company building the accounting and filing tools we wanted to use ourselves.
Why we built it
On 31 March 2026 HMRC closed the free filing service that small companies had used for years. Every UK limited company now needs commercial software to file its corporation tax return, whether or not its accounts are complicated enough to warrant it.
Most of the answers to that are a bookkeeping product with filing bolted on, or a filing product with no idea what is in your books. Both leave you copying figures between them at the point in the year when a mistake is most expensive. Stewardry keeps the ledger and the return in one place, so the numbers on the CT600 are the numbers in your accounts, and you can see how one became the other.
How we work
Your records stay yours. Everything you put into Stewardry can be exported in a form you can read and use elsewhere. We would rather you stayed because leaving is easy than because it is difficult.
The software is open. The core is published under the AGPL and the source is linked from the foot of every page. You can read what it does with your figures rather than take our word for it.
We show our arithmetic. A tax return that produces a number without explaining it is asking to be trusted blindly. Every figure Stewardry puts on a return can be traced back to the entries it came from.
